July Weather
Was Normal

Last month's weather in Great-
er Lawrence wasn't really ab-
normal, according to official
records.

This, despite the fact that it
was on the cool and wet side
and it was not considered good
vacation weather.

It rained nine of the 31 days
^ind there were only seven clear
days.

Total rainfall of 3.83 inches
was a little above average for
the «eventh month of the year.

The mean temperature of 69.1
degrees was slightly below nor-
mal. The highest, 90. was re-
corded July 5, and the lowest,
48, July 6.

In July, 1961, rainfall here was
4.46 inches and in July, 1960 it
was 6.21 inches.

The record July rainfall here
was 12.72 inches in 1915.

In addition to the seven clear
days there were 13 partly cloudy
and 11 cloudy days.

Dry SpeU Early In July

During the first eight days of
the month there was no percipita-
tion for crops and lawns. Early
in the month, North Reading
selectmen declared a state of em-
ergency as a critical water short-
age developed in that community.
The ban was removed a short
time later.

Several thunder storms that
folowed the dry period remedied
conditions and raised the level
of water in most ponds and lakes
several inches.

Boston weather records show
that city experienced its coldest
I July in 39 years. It wast he fii'st
I July in 74 years the temperature
failed to reach 90 degrees in the
Hub. Boston had only 1.61 inches
of rain, compared to the 3.83
inches that fell in Lawrence:.

Dismal September Storm
Needed to Fulfill Proverb

By SUMNER BARTON

weather proverb for three days

An old

states that on or about the be-
ginnmg of Autumn, when the
sun rests over the equator on
its journey south, New Eng-
land will have a storm of
major proportion.

It was even given a name —
line storm or equinoctial storm,
coming as it does at the time of
the autumnal equinox.

Meteorologists generally,
however, will say it is merely
coincidence if there should be
a major storm at the equinox.

Coincidence or not, New
England had last week a storm
that fit the definition of the
proverb.

Two slow moving disturb-
ances caught the Northeast in
a pincers and held it helpless

while meting
out severe punishment.

Boston had gusts of 55
miles an hour; the Blue Hill
Observatory in Milton, at an
altitude of 629 feet, reported
69-mile-an-hour winds.

Boston had 3.22 inches of
rain, a month's supply in three
days. The accumulation for
September as a whole was 4.1
inches (0.64 inch above nor
mal), definite proof that the
storm of Sept. 27-29 turned
what otherwise would have
been an unusually dry montl^
into a wet on^.

The Summer chill continued
into September, the third
month in a row with below-
normal temperatures. This has
given rise to all sorts of dire
predictions about the Winter
to come. Some scientists be-
lieve we are returning to the
cold cycle. Others prefer to
wait and see.

^ At any rate, after a normal
tv/o weeks the temperature

went on the skids in the last
half of September, and some
places in New England had
their earliest freezes in his-
tory.

The coldest morning was the '
21st, when Boston's ten. era-
ture fell to 41 degrees,* just i
two degrees above the all-
time record for so early in the
j season. Many places had read-
ings of 27. The lowest was 24'
at Birch Hill Dam in South!
Royalston. ^
Boston's mean temperature'
for the month was 62.9 de-ii
grees, 2.4 below normal. \{

1962 Was the Coldest*
Of the Past 22 Years

By SUMNER BARTON

December took a page out of
March's book.

It came in like a lamb and
went out like a lion-

The temperature for the
first 9 days was far warmer
than normal (6 degrees) and
it seemed a change was in the
air.

Then the ice cubes were
dropped in and the tempera-
ture plummeted, reaching 4
degrees below zero on the last
day of the month, with wind
gusts exceeding 60 miles an
hour.

The result was that the mean
temperature for December
read 30.0 degrees. That is 3.3
; degrees under normal, the
^ixth month in a row that Bos-
Wtfn was chillier than average.

It also meant that 1962 was
the coldest of the last 22
years in Boston.

The average temperature
last year was 49.8 degrees.
Normal is 51.4. Nine months
were colder than usual and
these included January, Feb-
ruary, May and the last six
months of the year.
I ★ ★ ★

I Boston was fortunate in one
respect in December. Snowfall
I was relatively light, despite
'the fact that some snow fell
jon 13 days. One moderate
storm dropped 3.6 inches on
iDec. 22 and that was abott all
that ijiatttered. Th^ accumula-

tion for the month was 5.1
[inches, but numerous small
snowfalls contributed to that.
I This figure was 1.5 inches
under normal for December.

Boston escaped what coul
have been a disabling^ snow<
storm when rain fell here
Dec. 30 while central aLoa
northern Maine was whipf»e/d
by a vicious blizzard tlhat
left more than 3 feet of sn ow
in many communities.

Total precipitation here'
(rain and melted ^show)
amounted to 4.53 mches, but
most o fits came from a 2.74-
inch rainfall on Dec. 5-6

This supply contribut(;d to-
ward an excess for 19fi2, a
good sign in these day^ ofi
water shortages. Last yeai' had
a total of 43.23 inches. Normal '
is 42.77.

★ ★ ★ I
Two weather events of note]
in 1962 were a 7.01-inch rain->
storm on Oct. 5 to 7, the- third 1
greatest storm total of ii'ecord,;
and the snowiest February in'
28 years (28.7 inches). j
I Might as well add on* more,!
the sub-zero cold of y»jBterday|
and consistent .chill of Jthe past.
I six months. Measured in fuel
consumption, the heatjing sea-
son to date shows Ich percent
more fuel degree days than|
normal and 17 percfint abovej
last year, \
